Then one day I decided to try out for the football team and everything
changed. I loved the competition and that must have been what impressed
the coaches because somehow I made the team. That's when my competitive
drive kicked in and I was determined to win a starting spot and play on
the varsity team.
I started reading every muscle and training magazine I could get my
hands on. I was training almost everyday and before long I was getting
results. I started
combining different exercises and training
techniques to give me an edge over my teammates and my competition.
I
watched teammates suffer injuries and just knew that they could have
been prevented.

I learned how the body really works and especially how to heal and
prevent
injuries.
I began my career as Physical Therapist and I couldn't believe how many
people came into my office with injuries that could have been prevented
if only they'd trained the right way.
I started doing some personal training in my spare time, especially
helping kids learn the best and healthiest ways to train.
Then I got my big break. I
had just finished doing a training clinic
for a local youth baseball team, when a guy came out of the batting
cages and asked to talk to me.
Turns out he liked what I had to say and wanted to know if I would be
his personal trainer. I jumped at the chance, because I knew something
nobody else in that facility had realized...
He wasn't a famous All-Star or
anything but as a die-hard Mets fan I recognized him right away as
their back up first baseman.
So I become his
offseason personal trainer and began to learn how the pro athlete
really thinks and trains. Most of all, I realized that....
Just
like my CEO clients he demanded results and in this case he wanted them
quickly... but more importantly he needed to see improvements in his
statistics or both of us were going to be out of a job.
I created a training system that would get him the quick results he
needed to be ready for the season while also conditioning his body to
keep him healthy all season long.
Well that season he was the
#1 pinch hitter in all of major league
baseball!
That's when I got a call I could not believe. The New York Mets wanted
to talk to me about being their Physical Therapist and Assistant
Strength Coach. Turns out the player had raved about how much I had
helped him and they wanted to see if I could do that for the rest of
the
team.
As a lifelong Mets fan I was excited just to go down to Spring Training
and talk to the team.
I showed management the training plan I'd created, really the very
first draft of AthLEAN-X and put the players through a couple of drills.
But I knew I wouldn't get the
job. See, absolutely nobody goes straight into the major leagues.
Just like players,
trainers are supposed to start out working at colleges and semi-pro
teams then work their way through the minors for years before they even
get close to a major league clubhouse.
But...Then I got
the
call!
I was
going to work for my favorite baseball team training the same players
I'd been watching on TV.
Turns
out there was a lot I didn't understand about pro-athletes, things that
most people think from the outside that simply aren't true.
Between practice, team meetings, media events, preparation and actual
games they don't have a lot time to actually workout. It's even worse
when they are on the road stuck on planes and buses.
Because they always have
another game to play they can't afford to do a
workout that leaves them sore or unable to move the next day.
They're paranoid about injury and scared silly about trying anything
new.
Which makes them really suspicious about having new people work with
their
bodies.
Since I didn't come up through minors and the player I'd worked with
had been traded there was nobody to vouch for me.
Management made it clear that they had $200 Million reasons that I need
to succeed but I couldn't get anyone to listen to me.
That's
when I realized that when it counts pro athletes are just like every
other guy. They might need to be fit for their job but they also care
about looking good.
As soon as they saw the lean muscular body I had under my shirt they
all wanted to know if I could do that for them. I couldn't believe it.
I'd been nervous around these guys and was embarrassed to change in the
clubhouse and here were these incredible athletes wanting to look
like me.
These
guys wanted results but they needed it
on their terms.
IT BECAME VERY CLEAR THAT PRO ATHLETES...
Need workouts they could
do in limited time - So I created workouts that could be
completed in well under an hour.
Have to push
themselves without winding up to sore for the next day's game
- So I gave them a workout that was low impact on their joints...but high impact in its ability to
still produce monster
results.
Are often busy
too or exhausted from games and to be able to train
- So
I put together a training system where they only had to work out just a
few days a week.
Need workouts
that keep them interested - So I designed something new
from almost every workout and, when I did repeat things they were mixed
with other exercises to create totally new workouts.
Want workouts
they could do in other locker-rooms or hotel gyms
- So I
created muscle building exercises that didn't require all sorts of complicated or
expensive equipment
They started to see the results almost immediately
and pretty soon they all started to look much better than I did. Now, I
could have just chalked that up genetics but like I've said I'm a
competitive guy and I had earned so much cred by looking good that I
was determined to keep pace.
So I started working out more and more.
Between my job training the players and handling their PT I was already
exhausted, but I just kept adding days and hours to my workout... and
it was getting me nowhere.
That's when I realized...

- And it sure as hell wasn't anything
they were taking anything (that clubhouse was scrupulously clean entire
time I was there)
The skill position practice
they were doing, combined with my training, was getting them into
fantastic shape.
The hitting, fielding
and pitching drills they were doing were so unlike the usual fitness
training exercises I was used to that it never occured to me they were
actually doing more than making them better ball players... they were
giving them better bodies.
I realized that by
combining the best parts of these drills with my other workouts that
not only could I improve my own body but I could get these guys into
the best shape of their lives!
With these new workouts the players
were actually working
out less and getting even better results.
And So Was I!
From
there on out the job was a dream.
I was
with the team everyday and traveled with them on the road. I had better than a front row seat to
games I used to watch on TV.
The
time I was with the Mets were some of their most successful years in
recent memory but more importantly they were also the healthiest the
team had ever been.
My first year, the team had the best record in the National League and
just missed the World Series... But I was even more proud to help a
player with a notorious hamstring problem have his healthiest season as
a pro.
I was on top of my game. As the years went on, though, the thrill of
being with the team began to fade and long road trips turned into time
I spent missing my wife and family.
