When I look at the direction my career has taken these days and I think back to where it all began, I realize I have three people to thank…and not one of them has ever even met me!  Those three guys are Arnold, Stallone and Ravishing Rick Rude!

I know…laugh all you want, but I’m a product of the 80’s.  Having always been a fan of action (be it my own participation in sports, watching my favorite action heroes on the big screen, or getting caught up in the male soap opera that is WWE Wrestling) I always found entertainment in the fast paced, high risk, high reward activities.

How Did These Guys Get To Look Like This?

That said, it was hard not too watch these guys and wonder to myself as I’d look down at my chest absent of any size and definition, or barely visible one-pack abs and say “How the heck did these guys get to look like this?!?” It seemed impossible to say the least and I couldn’t even imagine the right place to start.  But the key is that I started. Little by little, I’d read the magazines….copy some of the workouts (little did I know back then that 27 sets for chest actually WAS NOT a good thing!) and I made at least a little progress.

Any time I might be on the verge of giving up and leaving the lifting to someone else, they’d go and do it again. Yep…they’d come out with yet another sequel!  Just when I was ready to pack it in, out comes Rocky III.  I’d see Stallone getting more ripped and more muscular than ever and think…”ok, time to get back to the gym again!” I’d quickly fall back into the overtraining rut and then Arnold would come out with Predator!  I mean geez…the freaking guy took down an Alien with that body, if I could just get to half as muscular I might be able to impress a girl or two in middle school right?!?

Saturday mornings were filled with WWF Wrestling (WWE now).  Not only did the ridiculous story lines keep me glued to the tube for every match but so did the fitness levels these guys were in.  Little did I know then that the majority of this was all chemically enhanced shall we say? Didn’t matter though.

Who’s Your Inspiration?

I saw a look that inspired me to want to do something about my body and that was enough to change my life. The bug had bitten me, and from those early days…fitness became more than just part of my life, it became my lifestyle. So with that I ask you….who inspired you? Maybe you want to look like a Mr. Olympia?  Maybe you want to look like David Beckham?  Taylor Lautner?  Terrell Owens? Rinaldi?  Who is your Sly/Arnold/Rick Rude?  I’d love to hear from you.  Til then…keep pressing on and become what you know you can be.

Stay Strong,

Jeff
